The Iron Sharpeners

This is not a Bible study. This is not your wife’s devotional. This is a brotherhood.

Men who protect, provide, and pursue.

The Fight

There Is a War.

A war for your marriage, your kids, your mind, your body. A war for eternity. The enemy doesn't care that you're tired. He's counting on it.

The men of Scripture knew it. They walked hundreds of miles through hostile country. They raided kings by night to rescue family, chased lions into pits on snowy days, and stood in front of the court that had just executed their King and refused to shut up. They rebuilt the wall with a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other.

Somewhere along the way the church traded their story for a softer one. It told men to sit still and sing. Men noticed. Men left. And the enemy took every yard of ground they walked away from.

We're taking it back.

The Call

You Were Built for This.

The hands that swing a hammer, throw a punch, and hold a newborn were made by the same God, on purpose, for a fight. Strength was never the problem. Strength without a King is.

The church told you to be nice. Nobody told you to be dangerous for something good. This is what that means.

I

Protect

You are the first line between your family and whatever comes through the door, so be ready when it does. Lift. Get your weight and your blood pressure to where the doctor stops bringing them up. Eat like a man who plans to be strong at seventy. Train to fight: get on the mat, pick jiu-jitsu or wrestling or Muay Thai, and stay long enough to get comfortable losing to better men. Buy the firearm, seek instruction, then put the rounds through it, dry fire at home and live fire at the range, until drawing it is boring and hitting with it is certain. Then put the same work into restraint. Walk away from the fight that doesn't need you, and be the calmest man in the room when one does.

II

Provide

Providing starts with the work in front of you. Show up early, learn the whole job, and give a hundred percent whether or not the company has earned it. Your work carries your name. Know your numbers at home the way you know them at work: what comes in, what goes out, what you owe, and how long you'd last if the check stopped. Pay off the debt. Build the reserve. Give before you spend. If the money isn't enough, take the second job, get the certification, learn the trade, start the side business. Don't wait on the raise. Go find the money. Your wife should never have to be the one asking where it went.

III

Pursue

Open the Bible every day. Read it in the morning, before anything else gets to you, and read enough that you know where you are in it. Pray every day, out loud when you can, about the real things: your wife, your kids, your struggles, the money, the man you're becoming. Pray with your wife, and pray over your kids before they walk out the door. Get into a church, serve in it, and stay through the seasons you don't like the sermons. Then find men who are chasing the same King and give them a standing invitation to call you out. None of this holds for long on your own, and you were never asked to carry it that way.

That's the standard. Hold it, and hold your brothers to it.

"Fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes."

Nehemiah 4:14

Don’t Do This Alone

Four men. One book. Once a week.

The book is built in weekly batches. Read the week on your own. Gather on the seventh day. Three questions, one prayer, and a table where nobody gets to coast.

You don’t need a perfect place. You need a garage and three men who’ll show up.

Iron Sharpeners

What we train with.

Seventy-three days. Seventy men. One standard. Shepherds and kings, prophets and fishermen, a cupbearer, a table-waiter, and at the center of them all, the King Himself. Each day: the Scripture printed in full, a reflection on the man and his moment, three questions, and a prayer. Ten minutes. And the third question always asks you to do something about it.
